The slider is a very important pitch in baseball. Usually symboled by the catcher holding down 2 or 3 fingers to the pitcher, the slider is a pitch where the pitcher grips the side of the ball splitting the seams with his index and middle finger. Only the the index finger, middle finger, and thumb should be on the ball. When throwing the pitch, during the release of the ball, snapping the wrist along with the grip makes the ball move either away or towards a batter. The ball is to be thrown as hard as a fast ball, but will not travel the same speed because of the grip. This is a very effective breaking pitch that deceives the batter. Not always though...do not leave the pitch hang high in the strike zone.
